Ponta Delgada, the island's capital and seat of many of the Azores Autonomous Region's governing bodies, began life as a small fishing village. It acquired its status very early in the archipelago's history, after the 1522 earthquake that almost completely destroyed Vila Franca do Campo. Overlooking a wide bay, the town's narrow streets are steeped in history, and it's the overall harmony of the town that gives it its charm. The consistency of its architectural styles is reinforced by the almost systematic use of volcanic stone in its construction. Ponta Delgada is a capital on a human scale, home to some 46,000 inhabitants, and can be explored on foot from one end to the other without the need to be an experienced hiker.
