The first settlers came to Ribeira Grande in the early 16th century. Along the river, they built numerous mills for spinning linen and wool. What remains is a certain atmosphere and a historic center where the streets, which intersect at right angles, are delineated by mansions typical of the Azorean architecture of the time. Ribeira Grande acquired city status in 1981. Today, it is the island's second-largest city, encompassing 14 parishes and home to just over 32,000 inhabitants.
