With its large expanse of light-colored sand wedged between two cliffs, Praia Formosa is a rarity on the Azores islands, where black sands of volcanic origin predominate. Its transparent, shallow waters make it a popular leisure spot in this southern part of the island. The beach is supervised in summer, and you'll find a small snack bar, showers and sanitary facilities. On the road that runs along the beach, you can see the ruins of the São João Baptista fort, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. For over 25 years, Praia Formosa has been the venue for the Maré de Agosto festival, held every August and attended by all the big names in international music.
