A small fishing village in the middle of a desert landscape, the vegetation here is sparse. Its church is well worth a visit: an arch from the old chapel, the oldest building in the Azores archipelago, is said to have been the place where Christopher Columbus attended mass on his return from his voyage of discovery of America. But Anjos is best known for its bay, a popular bathing and relaxation area for tourists in summer, as well as for the many species of migratory birds that choose this spot as a resting and feeding area on their way south.
