Located on the eastern side of the island, Santo Espírito is home to several points of interest. In addition to its crafts cooperative and museum, it is home to the 16th-century church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação, with its striking Baroque façade and black lava sculptures. Santo Espírito also marks the start of a beautiful hike (temporarily closed) that takes you to Ponta do Castelo in around 3 hours. From the Santo Espírito church, this hike leads to the Gonçalo Velho lighthouse, at the far end of the Ponta do Castelo. Don't miss the traditional windmill and the Ribeira do Aveiro waterfall along the way.
