This locality is reputed to contain a large quantity ofalmagre, a clay very rich in lead (hence its reddish color) that was once used to paint houses with lime or to make porcelain (vitrified clay). There are also the ruins of wind and water mills(azenha) and pits known as "matamouros", where grain and other goods were once hidden from corsairs. They were then covered with a stone or slab marked with a sign to identify the owner. You can visit one of these caches on the street leading down to Covas, to the left of the Quinta do Falcão.
