The land is so fertile that you'd think you were in a tiny rainforest, with a huge palm tree at its center, a 17th-century church and polychrome azulejos depicting the crucifixion. Thanks to its rich, fertile soils, São Pedro has always been an agricultural center and the basis of the region's economy. This has ensured prosperity in the past, and harvests continue to flourish today. Beautiful stately homes and large manor houses (called solares in Portuguese) with their own chapels are the pride of the locals and the delight of tourists.
