The name comes from its geographical location (the town is situated on a "fertile plain" or campo) and economic position (it was a "franche" or franca town, and its inhabitants were exempt from taxes). It is now a typical fishing port, as are the local potteries, whose tradition goes back several centuries. Its economic prosperity has been ensured by the cultivation of woad and sugar cane, as well as wheat, corn, sweet potatoes, vines, bananas and pineapples: in this concelho alone, the 800 greenhouses produce between 500,000 and 800,000 fruits every year. Of course, livestock farming and fishing are still essential today.
