It's the highest point on the island, towering 1,105 metres above land and sea. This volcanic peak is the perfect place for a hike. Sadly famous, it was here that boxer Marcel Cerdan and violinist Ginette Neveu crashed their plane into Pico da Vara on October 27, 1949, on their way to New York to take revenge on Jake LaMotta and reach Édith Piaf more quickly (he had to travel by boat and changed his ticket in extremis ). It was Air France's first accident on the Paris-New York route, after more than 2,000 uneventful crossings.
