As its name suggests, Nordeste, nicknamed "The Tenth Island", is located at the eastern tip of the island of São Miguel. If the Azores are already, in many ways, a land at the end of the world, Nordeste is for the Azoreans of São Miguel their island end of the world. Before the freeway was completed in 2011, getting there required an "expedition" from the capital, which, on an Azorean scale, was a long journey. Nordeste is the ideal starting point for hikers in search of the wilderness: they'll be sure to find the trails they need for their adventures in the forest that covers the nearby Pico da Vara (1,103 m).
