This small town between Lagoa and Vila Franca do Campo is especially interesting for its museum complex, one of the most important on the archipelago. You can visit three museums: one agricultural, one ethnographic and one of sacred art. It's a great way to kill three birds with one stone and learn a lot about the archipelago. The region takes its name from the ravine that runs alongside the valley and empties into the sea, through a grotto of cliffs and rocks. Until the 17th century, it was a small village known as a hunting ground for guinea fowl, but few people settled there due to its difficult accessibility.
