In Ribeira Seca, a municipality adjoining Ribeira Grande, the ruins of a fountain buried by the eruption of Pico do Sapateiro in 1563 are worth a brief stop. The church of São Pedro, just opposite, would be nothing remarkable were it not for the popular Cavalhadas de São Pedro festival held every June 29 to celebrate Ribeira Grande's elevation to city status. For the sake of completeness, an interesting natural site can be visited in summer, when the sun is shining: the Furna do Sol at Ponta do Cintrão, near Ribeirinha. It can only be reached by sea. If you fancy an adventure, ask at the Ribeira Grande tourist office.
