At the very eastern end of the island, Maia is a summer village where the large white houses of the emigrants stand out. Here you can swim in natural pools or climb up to the Gonçalo Velho lighthouse. Cautious drivers should stop their cars at the beginning of the path before venturing out: it would be very risky to attempt a U-turn if another car was involved. You can also admire the beautiful Cascade do Aveiro. Located at the end of the road through the village of Maia, it cascades down the cliff between terraced vineyards. A picnic table is provided to enjoy the view.
