Visit to the Museum of Sacred Art, annexed to the Carlos Machado Museum in Ponta Delgada.
Annex to the Carlos Machado Museum. For the record, the grandiose frontispiece begun in 1738 was never completed because the Jesuits were expelled from the archipelago in 1759, on the orders of the Marquis of Pombal. The Jesuit College, of which the church is a part, now houses a small but instructive museum of sacred art. The interior of the church boasts an imposing nave and beautiful Baroque woodwork. An impressive visit, especially if you're interested in sacred art.
