Adelaide, the state capital, has a population of around 1.3 million. Built on a rectilinear plan, it is surrounded by four avenues: North, East, West and South Terraces, with King William Street running through the middle. Continuing this opulent avenue, a bridge over the Torrens River links the city center to Victorian North Adelaide. The city's long Puritan past has earned it the nickname " City of Churches ". Australians like to joke about the city's reputation today, asking whether Adelaide is now "the city of many churches" or "the city of many pubs". After the Second World War, Adelaide welcomed a large influx of European immigrants, mainly Greeks and Italians.Adelaide's mild climate and diverse population make it a charming place to live. Adelaide has escaped the many gleaming skyscrapers of Australia's other capital cities. The presence of a few modern buildings does not detract from its colonial character. Avoiding the "Americanization" of its sisters, it has remained a provincial city, with a slower, more relaxed lifestyle. It is, however, a metropolis of the arts and letters. The creation of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1985 gave the city an international media dimension, before it was transferred to Melbourne in 1995, much to the regret of the locals. It has since been replaced by the Clipsal 500, a V8 race. The circuit is located to the east of the city center, in Victoria Park Racecourse.Adelaide is also renowned for its many arts, theatre and music festivals, which punctuate the city throughout the year.
