It's the main town in the wine-growing region of the same name, which begins south of the Onkaparinga River National Park. Located 35 km south of Adelaide, the McLaren Vale wine region is the gateway to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Here you'll find around 120 wineries, many of which offer free tastings and direct sales. Several picturesque roads (including the Oliviers Road) allow you to explore every nook and cranny. From the nearby town of Cape Jervis, at the tip of the peninsula and departure point for ferries to Kangaroo Island, begins the famous Heysen Trail, a 1,200 km signposted path that leads to Parachilna Gorge. To be completed between May and October, as summer is particularly ungrateful for walkers. Allow a month's hiking for the entire route. The McLaren Vale Harvest Festival, in January, and the McLaren Vale BankSA Sea and Vines Festival, in June, are among the major festivities in the McLaren Vale region.
