Port Elliot, a small town of 2,000 inhabitants, lies 8 km east of Victor Harbor. Its pretty beach, guarded by tall Norfolk pines, boasts an ocean view from Freeman Lookout (The Strand), not far from the YHA. A commemorative plaque commemorates Encounter Bay as the place where explorers Nicolas Baudin and Matthew Flinders met in 1802. Nearby is Continental Park and an obelisk erected in 1852 to guide ships into the harbour. Visible from 16 km offshore, a flag flew at its summit.
