This village, 107 km from Adelaide, lies at the south-western tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. It's the terminal for the ferries that cross the Backstairs Passage several times a day to link the mainland and Kangaroo Island. But it's also the starting point for the famous Heysen Trail, a 1,200 km signposted path that leads to Parachilna Gorge, in the Flinders Ranges, via the Mount Lofty Ranges. The trail is best walked between May and October, as summer is particularly ungrateful for walkers. You can do it in sections, but allow a month's hiking for the whole route.
