This popular seaside town of 16,000 inhabitants, off which southern whales migrate, is located 80 km from Adelaide. Its main attraction is Granite Island, a few hundred metres from the shore, linked to it by a jetty built in 1875. The island welcomes over 700,000 visitors a year. It can be reached on foot or by horse-drawn double-decker streetcar. The island is famous for its colonies of pygmy penguins, whose approach is strictly regulated. On hot days, tourists seek its coolness (5 to 10°C cooler than Adelaide). It is served by Stateliner buses.
