Hahndorf is the most famous and touristic village of German origin in the region. It was founded in 1839 by the Danish captain Dirk Hahn and is now a state heritage site. The village has preserved its original architecture and is much visited, especially at weekends. There's plenty of B&B accommodation, restaurants and artists' studios. In January of each year, Hahndorf Founder's Day is held in honor of the early pioneers. It's a proud display of old-fashioned customs, with German handicrafts for sale, a gala parade, competitions, stalls and music, rather like a Bavarian biergarten.
