Bougival's name may come from the Frankish Baldo Gisilo ("the brave Gisilo"), after the man who once ruled this valley. The town is renowned for its peaceful landscapes and charming banks of the Seine. In the 18thcentury , it was chosen as the starting point for the construction of the famous Machine de Marly. In the 19th century, the development of the railroads led to Bougival's revival. The guinguettes flourished, and people came to dance and canoe... Above all, the picturesque gaiety of these new leisure activities inspired those whom history will remember as the Impressionists.
