For a long time property of the abbey of Saint-Denis, then of the family of the cardinal of Richelieu, the lands of Rueil-Malmaison gained their notoriety thanks to its castle which belonged to Joséphine de Beauharnais. The old houses are now museums dedicated to Napoleonic history. Rueil-Malmaison is home to many tertiary activities. Reputed to be a rather chic commune - even if some large housing estates remain - the city is particularly well served by public transport and communication routes (RN 13 and A 86, which passes under the northwestern part of the city) and has nearly 80,000 inhabitants.
