In the 19th century, the town of Chatou was transformed under the impetus of its first magistrates - including Maurice Berteaux. The Paris - Le Pecq railroad line was opened in 1837, making Chatou a popular vacation spot for the Parisian bourgeoisie, who built numerous residences here. In 1898, the establishment of the Pathé factories also turned Chatou into a modern town, and the unspoilt landscapes along the Seine, the guinguette life and the pleasures of canoeing attracted and inspired the great painters. Auguste Renoir, in particular, immortalized this atmosphere in some 30 paintings, including Portrait de Monsieur Fournaise and Le Déjeuner des canotiers.
