The town's name derives from the Romanic "montani" (meaning "mountainous place") and the Frankish "bretonneux" (meaning "marshy"). Its church, dating from the 13th century, attests to the presence of a small village clustered around the building. Before becoming part of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines conurbation, Montigny-le-Bretonneux was a small rural village in the Yvelines region, dedicated to agriculture. Barely 1,300 souls lived there in 1970, but a decade later the population had risen to 10,000. Today, the town has a population of over 35,000 and is home to a number of dynamic companies, mainly in the service sector.
