Less popular than Chantilly or Senlis, the Oise prefecture is nonetheless worth a visit for its cathedral and former episcopal palace. In the town center, you'll find houses built in the 16th century that survived the German bombardments of 1940, recognizable by their half-timbered facades and corbelled floors. Every June, Beauvais celebrates the victory of Jeanne Hachette in 1472, when she led the resistance against the 80,000 men of Charles the Bold who laid siege to the city. Beauvais is home to one of France's national tapestry factories, employing some twenty weavers.
