Le Vésinet was once a wood owned by the monks of the Fontenelle abbey. In 1595, Henri IV attached it to his hunting estate at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Then, during the French Revolution, the wooded territories of the royal hunting grounds were divided between the communes of Chatou, Croissy, Le Pecq and Montesson. The "colony" of Le Vésinet came into being in 1858, thanks to Charles de Morny and industrialist Alphonse Pallu, who created a 436-hectare housing estate combining town and country. In 1875, the ever-growing number of residents obtained the status of a separate commune, with Pallu becoming its first mayor.
