Carrières-sur-Seine sits on the side of a small cliff overlooking the Seine. First called Quadraria, then Carreria, it was long called Carrières-Saint-Denis, before being definitively named Carrières-sur-Seine in 1905. The town owes its name to the presence of numerous limestone quarries, which were first exploited in the5th century. The hamlet was founded in 1137 by Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis. The town thus came under the direct control of the Abbey of Saint-Denis, thanks to its fertile soil and high-quality stone. The Basilica of Saint-Denis was partly built with stone from Carrières. It was at this time that the tithe barn was built to house the harvests, which can still be seen today and is listed as a Monument Historique. The capitals of the Basilique Saint-Denis were carved using stone (liais) from Carrières. From the 15th century onwards, Carrières-Saint-Denis forged its geographical identity in relation to its neighbors Houilles and Montesson. It wasn't until the French Revolution that Carrières-Saint-Denis was officially separated from the village of l'Abbaye de Saint-Denis, and took its first name of Carrières-sur-Seine, which became official in 1905.In the village section, you can discover the troglodyte houses that give Carrières-sur-Seine its special charm. Located halfway between Porte Maillot and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Carrières has a population of just over 15,000.
