The Burgundy-Franche-Comté region is a tourist region in more ways than one, spread over 8 departments - Côte-d'Or, Doubs, Haute-Saône, Jura, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire, Territoire de Belfort, Yonne -, offering nature, built heritage and gastronomy. From the mountains of the Haut-Jura to the lakes of the Morvan, from the banks of the Doubs and the Saône to those of the Seine and the Loire, there is a great diversity of landscapes and preserved nature to be discovered on foot, on horseback or in a caravan, by canoe, by boat or by motorbike... The 1,000 km of canals in Burgundy, the plateau of 1,000 ponds (Haute-Saône), the 7 Hérisson waterfalls (Jura), the Mont Beuvray and the Roche de Solutré (a major site in France) are all yours.
In the historical chapter: the hospices of Beaune, the Clos de Vougeot, the Palace of the Dukes and States in Dijon, the remains of Alesia, the abbeys of Cîteaux and Cluny, Bartholdi's lion in Belfort, Vézelay and its basilica. Unesco has also classified the citadel of Besançon and the climates of the Burgundy vineyards, with 33 Grand Crus Classés and 100 AOCs.
Local specialities include parsley ham, Montbéliard or Morteau sausage, snails, comté, morbier, Mont d'Or vacherin, cancoillotte, époissesand bleu de Gex. Let's add Dijon mustard and gingerbread and Flavigny aniseed.
Finally, Burgundy-Franche-Comté is a wellness destination with 5 spas: Luxeuil-les-Bains, Bourbon-Lancy, Salins-les-Bains, Lons-le-Saunier and Saint-Honoré-les-Bains. With so many advantages, you can't do without your Little Futé Bourgogne-France-Comté!
Burgundy-Franche-Comté is so rich and varied that it deserves several stays and offers multiple possibilities that allow you to program your stays in all four seasons. Throughout the year, you have appointments, atmospheres and attractions that vary from one end of the region to the other. Of course, the high tourist season is in summer: for all outdoor stays, this is the right time. However, when hiking or biking, it is best to avoid the high summer, which can be very hot. For the hottest weeks, you may prefer to slide down the river or take up water sports. As for skiing in the Jura, it's in winter, when the snow has fallen!
As the region is very touristic, there is no need to worry about the closure of accommodation, restaurants or museums when the high season ends. Moreover, the tourist offer being important, you will not have any difficulty to organize your stay, even at the last moment, except during the most important appointments
Although the wine routes and wine cellars are open all year round, the festival is most beautiful at harvest time, in January for the Saint Vincent's Day, which is celebrated in Burgundy's wine-growing villages, or on the first weekend of February during the "Percée du Vin Jaune" (Jura). You can also attend the Hospices de Beaune wine auction, one of the most famous charity events in the world, on the third Sunday of November. But if you want a seat, you'll have to make arrangements well in advance.
In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, the climate varies from one area to another. Burgundy combines oceanic, continental and southern influences. The Morvan and the Jura mountains have a climate marked by high rainfall, cold and snowy winters and warm, even cool summers. In the Saône plain, the southern influence goes as far as Dijon and the wine coast. From the north to the south of the region, the average temperature ranges from 1 to 2.5°C in January and 19 to 20.5°C in July.
