Nuits-Saint-Georges is the wine capital of the Côte de Nuits. It is said that the Paris-Lyon-Marseille railroad company would have liked to rename the town Nuits-sous-Beaune. The local population rejected this proposal outright, preferring in 1892 to add the name "Saint-Georges" to Nuits, the name of the most famous vineyard in the area. Nuits also owes its reputation to a certain Monsieur Fagon, physician to Louis XIV, who brought the famous wine to the royal table. Here, the Côte de Nuits and Hautes Côtes produce mainly world-renowned red wines, 24 Grands Crus, including one white, and 10 Appellations Villages.
