THE HÔTEL-DIEU OF BEAUNE
Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, a jewel of flamboyant gothic architecture with polychrome roofs and collections of earthenware and pewter.
A charitable foundation born of the torments of history
In the heart of Burgundy, the Hospices de Beaune tell an exceptional story, born on August 4, 1443. Founded by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, these hospices were the fruit of a humanist vision in difficult times. The long Hundred Years' War had just ended, leaving France bloodless. The plague had decimated the countryside, plunging the population into deep poverty. The founding charter provided for "the distribution of white bread to the poor of Jesus Christ asking for alms". Inspired by the architecture of Flemish hospitals, Nicolas Rolin called on craftsmen from Beaune to build this "Palace for the Poor", a place that would become a symbol of compassion.
A Gothic architectural masterpiece
The Hôtel-Dieu is distinguished by its flamboyant Gothic architecture and polychrome roofs with glazed tiles, a veritable painting resplendent in the sunlight. Its medieval style is directly inspired by Flemish aesthetics. The interior reveals preserved spaces: the Salle des Pôvres under a 15th-century barrel vault, where the sick were admitted. The kitchen retains its Gothic fireplaces and 17th-century automated spit. The apothecary fascinates: shelves lined with earthenware mortars, flasks and jars, containing surprising ingredients such as woodlouse powder and crayfish eyes.
An exceptional artistic heritage
Rogier van der Weyden's masterpiece, the polyptych of the Last Judgment, is the highlight of the visit. Originally exhibited in the Chapelle des Pôvres, it now benefits from a dedicated room. Donors have enriched the museum with murals, chests and tapestries.
A unique wine estate
In 1457, Guillemette Levernier initiated the donation of the first vines. Today, the estate extends over 60 hectares and is farmed organically. 85% of the parcels are classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru.
The most prestigious auction
Every third Sunday in November, the world's most famous wine event takes place. After Christie's, Sotheby's organizes this sale, where hundreds of bidders vie for these precious bottles. Proceeds from this charity sale will go towards improving hospital facilities and preserving this exceptional heritage. A place where history, charity, art and wine come together to tell the story of several centuries of Burgundian tradition. In short, not to be missed!
