Nestled in a meander of the Armançon river, the spur on which Semur is built is a natural defense against external dangers. The site encouraged human settlement and the construction of a fortress in the Middle Ages. Semur is home to a number of fine townhouses, old winegrowers' houses and a superb collegiate church. Take a close look at the facades of the houses: you'll discover a variety of inscriptions, with sayings from another era, such as "endurer et pleurer" (endure and weep) engraved on rue Buffon. The town's motto is inscribed on one of the porches: "Les Semurois se plaisent fort en l'accointance des estrangers"
