Occupied since Neolithic times, the Dachstein area is particularly rich in archaeological remains. In the Middle Ages, the bishops of Strasbourg were attracted by the site, which forms a large island surrounded by the arms of the Bruche. Dachstein, in medieval times, was protected by important fortifications. Of these, only a few ramparts and ditches remain today, as well as the magnificent gate of the Bruche or Breuschtor, which has corners reinforced by bossed stones. With a square plan, it was lowered by half at the end of the 16th century, as attested by the 1574 inscription on the outside of the building.
