The people of Ottrott are said to be "Geisse" (goats), "Muttle" (hornless goats) and "Rebmesserhengscht". The latter nickname reflects the importance of vines in the municipality and the art of Ottrott's inhabitants in wielding the serpette, perhaps not only for vineyard work, but also for settling certain inter-village disputes. The king grape variety in Ottrott is pinot noir. Its origins date back to 1109, when the Benedictine monks of Saint-Léonard brought young vine plants from Burgundy. Today, Rouge d'Ottrott is known and appreciated far beyond our borders.
