Molsheim belonged to the bishopric of Strasbourg, but when the latter changed to the Reformation, the town became the bastion of the Catholic Church in the Lower Rhine. The Jesuits founded a famous college there. Molsheim lost its importance after Louis XIV restored Catholic worship to the cathedral of Strasbourg. You will notice the remains of the fortifications, the Blacksmiths' gate, the Metzig and its clock with Jacquemarts, the timber-framed houses of the 16th and 17th centuries, the Carthusian priory, the Jesuits' church, the Oberkirch castle... The glory of Molsheim returned when it became the birthplace of Bugatti in 1910.
