The history of the city is, in fact, intimately linked to that of its abbey. In the 12th century, a church was built with the imposing western massif that we know today. The XIVth and XVth centuries mark the decline of the abbey, ruined by the owners of the city, the family of Geroldseck. The Peasants' War in 1525 and the Thirty Years' War caused the destruction and looting of some of the abbey's buildings, but the abbey was reborn from its centers and prospered until the French Revolution.
