Nestled in the middle of the Alsatian vineyards, the proud town of Ribeauvillé is undeniably one of the most beautiful villages in Alsace! Its mention already appears around the 8th century during the reign of Pepin the Short, under the name "Radbaldovillare". In the 11th century the castle of Ribeaupierre was built, followed two centuries later by the castles of Girsberg and Saint-Ulrich. In the Middle Ages, the city was the seat of the Ribeaupierre family, a powerful lordship that was responsible for the construction of these three fortified castles. The entire city was then surrounded by walls to protect it from possible external attacks. After the 17th century, the city became an important textile centre which was regularly modernised. Built in a longitudinal manner, Ribeauvillé still today has magnificent half-timbered houses which are the hallmark of the town and illustrate more than ever the power of the rich notables of the time. Going up the Grand'Rue, one discovers a lively and opulent city with many traditional shops. Don't miss to admire the town hall, the Butchers Tower and the former "Halle aux Blés" (wheat market), so many monuments that are worth seeing. You can also admire the city's gardens from which you can see the remains of the old fortifications. The Maison des Ménétriers is also worth a visit: unique in its kind, the decoration of its façade dates back to 1683. Ribeauvillé is ideally situated on the Wine Route. Its historic centre and main street stretch for several kilometres surrounded on both sides by... vines! Here you can discover and taste the best Alsatian wines. Ribeauvillé is the very image of the Alsatian village which has managed to preserve its character and traditions despite an influx of tourists that does not fail to change with the seasons. Friendly and convivial in summer and winter, the town of Ribeaupierre is also known for its famous Menetriers' festival (the Pfifferdaj in Alsatian) which perpetuates the memory of the meetings of the brotherhood of the Menetriers of Alsace created in 1481. This festival is the oldest in Alsace. Every first Sunday in September, it alternates between brass bands and the presentation of floats decorated by local associations on a theme renewed each year. On this occasion, one can measure the involvement of the inhabitants and especially their good mood! We laugh and sing and dance the night away... It's really a party like we don't do much anymore! Ribeauvillé is also known for its prestigious wineries, notably Trimbach. You can also enjoy yourself at the Casino Barrière located at the exit of the town towards Guémar. Also worth noting are the Carola-Wattwiller springs which produce a mineral water marketed throughout the region: this water has been on all the big tables since 1888. The cité des Ménétriers has also managed to maintain the activity of an old textile factory, namely Beauvillé. The company still produces high-end table linen that is sold worldwide.
