Famous for its Grand Cru Altenberg (high mountain, in French), one of the first classified terroirs (mentioned as early as the 11th century), Bergbieten counts nearly 700 souls nestled in a valley surrounded by vineyards - to the delight of its inhabitants and the local winegrowers. Mentioned as early as 1120, what was at the time only a hamlet belonged to the bishops of Strasbourg. The castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), so that today only a few ramparts remain as witnesses of this tumultuous past. Fun fact: 7000 silver coins from the 13th century were found there and are now on display in Berlin. Quite a fortune!
