Mutzig was an important town until the French Revolution. From the Middle Ages onwards, the town developed and was surrounded by walls, as evidenced by its beautiful gateway, the last witness to the old fortification system. During the 19th century, a number of flourishing industries were established here, including the Coulaux brothers' arms factory. Mutzig quickly became an issue in the various conflicts between France and Germany: the construction of a Prussian fort reputed to be impregnable began in 1893. In the second half of the 20th century, the town's fame grew thanks to its eponymous beer, production of which ceased in the 1990s.
