Benefiting from a terroir conducive to viticulture, the village has been known for its nectars since the Middle Ages. Its ancient names are Winburne (wine fountain) and Wingarde (wine garden). Built on an ancient Celtic sanctuary, its church was fortified. One of its relics is the articulated iron hand of knight Hans von Mittelhausen, Balbronn's bailiff in the 15th century. It is assumed that, during the Peasants' War, he lost his left arm to an axe or scythe. Only two examples of such a mechanical prosthesis exist in Europe, this one a replica, the original in the Strasbourg Historical Museum.
