Ascain is another example of a pretty village typically labourdin and basque. Water and mountains are the double attraction of this town of 4,213 inhabitants, crossed by the Nivelle and dominated by three peaks: the Bizkarzun, the Esnaur and Larrun dit la Rhune (905 metres). From the pediment square, you can take in the town at a glance: the lovely church sitting on its bell tower (1626), the streets lined with hotels-restaurants and the Rhune in the background. You will be told that Pierre loti wrote Ramuntcho from the square of this pediment (at the Hotel de la Rhune?) inspired by an Ascain platoon and that Churchill painted a watercolour there.
