Capital of the Rioja Alavesa, Laguardia has a great charm. Founded in 1164 by Sancho VI the Wise, fortified in the 13th century, the city, throughout the Middle Ages, was disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre, to finally be attached to Castile in the 15th century under the reign of the Catholic Kings. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the wine trade enriched the city, palaces flourished, as did the cuevas (wine cellars) that today still form a veritable labyrinth under the city. Laguardia has lost none of its medieval charm. What to see? The churches of San Juan and Santa Maria de los Reyes. Wine lovers should visit La Vinoteca (Plaza Mayor)
