Haro is located near a loop of the Ebro river that marks the border with Alava. It is a small, friendly town and is considered the wine capital of La Rioja. About fifteen wineries are located there, half of them in the Barrio de la Estación ("station district"), an emblematic area that developed in the 19th century when the Bordeaux winegrowers settled there, victims of mildew and then phylloxera. Some of the other outstanding heritage elements of the beautiful medieval district of Haro are the church of Santo Tomás and the old convent of San Agustín. Wine lovers should go shopping at the Vinoteca Rodríguez Alonso!
