Diego-Suarez, Malagasy for Antsiranana, is the largest city in the north of the country. With a population of 150,000, it offers a pleasant base for exploring the surrounding area, as the final stop on a tour of the Route du Nord, or as a departure point for Nosy Be. Diego has a special atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else. Sun-drenched streets, the fragrance of a Latin American port, old colonial buildings or wooden shacks lost amidst the flowers... The town, which is fairly spread out and built in a grid pattern, has enjoyed a certain tourist boom, helped by its proximity to Nosy Be. This renewed popularity is also due to the town's exceptional location, in the heart of one of the world's most beautiful bays. Although Antakarana and Sakalava make up the majority of the population, Antsiranana's strategic location and flourishing trade have attracted families from all regions of Madagascar to the metropolis. In addition to the Merina, Betsimisaraka and Antandroy, Diego is home to many mixed-race European descendants, a close-knit Indo-Pakistani community and numerous Comorians, Yemenis and Somalis.
