Founded in 1903 by Marshal Joffre, military commander of Antsiranana since 1897, Joffreville was a weekend resort for colonists. Today, it's a ghost town of around 6,000 inhabitants, bathed in a timeless atmosphere. It's much cooler here than in Diego (very pleasant in summer). The surrounding area is lush with mango and lettuce trees, a pleasant diversion from the aridity of the region.From Diego, the road is paved for 32 kilometers, with some good and some not so good. The Montagne d'Ambre park is located 4 km after the town: a dirt track, very tricky in wet weather.
