155 km north of Sambava, Vohimarina is the northern tip of the ancient Betsimisaraka kingdoms (18th-19th centuries). The small town lies at the end of a pretty green bay, protected by a coral reef. Here, as in Sambava and Antalaha, vanilla and cloves have brought prosperity. Vohémar is a hot spot for archaeological research: a necropolis of 500 tombs and trading posts dating from before the 13th century were discovered here in 1941, and the study of the skeletons revealed the profound intermingling of the populations. Historians believe that the Islamic populations settled here are the ancestors of the Antaimoro.
