The town of Ambilobe, 137 kilometers south of Diego, has a population of around 60,000. It's a big town without much charm, where it's very (very) hot. It's here that we take the dirt road to Vohémar to reach Sambava and Antalaha. In the town center, a pretty stone church stands in front of a majestic flamboyant tree. A casino (Le Joker) stands alongside a discotheque (Amical Club). Once famous for its sugarcane plantations, the town is now an important stopover for gemologists: it is surrounded by the Andavakoera gold, Amondromifehy sapphire and Antetezambato diamond deposits.
