Ambanja (approx. 35,000 inhabitants) lies 100 km south of Ambilobe. The town is surrounded by plantations, most of which date back to colonial times: cocoa (the famous Chocolaterie Robert has a 1,700-hectare plantation here), coffee, bananas, vanilla, pepper, sweet potatoes, tobacco, manioc... It's more of a stopover than a destination in itself, before continuing on to Nosy Be or Diego Suarez. However, there are a number of wonderful excursions to be had in the surrounding area, notably in the Sambirano valley, the river that flows through the town. The RN6, which you have to take to get to the district, is deteriorating year by year. Potholes are becoming ostrich nests.
