Hafnarfjörður, with a population of 25,000, is Iceland's third largest city. Built in a lava field 10 km south of Reykjavík, it is the first "urban encounter" for tourists arriving from the airport. It can be a short but pleasant trip from the centre of the Icelandic capital. Fishing has always been the main activity of the city, and even today the harbour is home to many boats. Typical Icelandic houses, clad in corrugated iron, still line the small winding streets of the town where lava seeps in at the most unexpected places, such as Merkurgata Street.
