The island is both a bird sanctuary and an important site in local history. The island was occupied very early on, as it was part of the domain of Iceland's first inhabitant, Ingólfur Arnarson. The coastline is not without interest: small cliff, cave, basalt columns. Part of it is closed to the public in early summer to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Once occupied by the Danish crown, the former residence of the Danish governors, the country's oldest stone building (1755) now houses a bistro. You'll also see a wooden church and a number of sculptures, including The Imagine Peace Tower.
