Eyrarbakki is a charming village of 530 inhabitants, once the largest trading community and main port on Iceland's south coast. A large number of preserved houses from the 1890-1920 period are located in Eyrarbakki and are the pride of the local population. Other attractions include two museums and a beautiful church, as well as a small antiques store run by a charming gentleman who will be delighted to show you old photos of the village. To the north-west of the village is a bird sanctuary. This is an important nesting area, particularly for wetland birds.
